Avira Error in updating

Why do I get the error message 537 during update?

Based on the customer support feedback, this article provides solutions to the most common causes of error during AntiVir updates.
Start Avira AntiVir Control Center and click Start update. A window with an error message may appear.

Click Report to open the update report of the error message. You can see the error message at the end of the report, above the summary. If there is a problem regarding the Internet connection of the AntiVir Update program, you will see the following or a similar error message:
16:15:24 [UPD] [ERROR] Generation of update structure failed. UpdateLib delivers error 537.
  1. Probably the Windows system settings could not be detected
    1. Start AntiVir Control Center
    2. Go to Extras - Configuration
    3. Activate the Expert mode
    4. Click General - Proxy settings
    5. Click the option No proxy server if you do not use a proxy
    6. Click OK to apply the configuration

  2. A security software with firewall is blocking the AntiVir update process update.exe Check if you have another security software with a firewall installed on your computer. Open the Windows Start menu, to see the list of the installed software.
If you can identify the security software with the firewall, you can generally see and modify the list of allowed and blocked applications in the firewall's settings. Make sure that none of AntiVir's program files are blocked, including sched.exe and update.exe
  3. Check the Network settings in AntiVir Control Center
    1. Start AntiVir Control Center
    2. Go to Extras - Configuration
    3. Activate the Expert mode
    4. Click the + sign next to Update
    5. Click Web server
    6. Select the option Use existing connection (network), if the connection to the Internet is not automatic. Else, select the second option Use the following connection and select from the list the dial-up connection you use.
    7. Click OK to apply the settings.
  4. Do you use a proxy for the Internet access or a security software, which installed a local proxy? Usually, most of the Internet surfers do not need to configure a proxy, to connect their computers to the Internet. If the computer is in a company network or if a security software installed a local proxy on it, to filter Internet data, then you also have to make these settings in the Avira software, to run AntiVir updates.
To check if there is a proxy set on your computer:
    1. Go to Start - (Settings) - Control Panel - Internet options
    2. Click the Connections tab
    3. Under Local Area Network (LAN) settings click the LAN settings button
    4. Check if the option Use a proxy server for your LAN... is active
    5. Write down the proxy address and port
    6. Close the configuration windows with OK
Then open the configuration of AntiVir Control Center and similar to case A, insert the data you wrote down. Type the Address and Port of the proxy server for the option Use the following proxy server. Leave the other fields empty.
  5. AntiVir Update is not run with proper access rights This is a workaround, for placing a shortcut to AntiVir Update on the Desktop, which will then run with different access rights.
    1. Right-click anywhere on the Desktop
    2. Select New - Shortcut from the context menu
    3. Copy one of the following lines as location:
      • For Windows 2000/XP:
        "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\update.exe" /DM="0" /NOMESSAGEBOX /RECEIVETIMEOUT=120
      • For Windows Vista/7 (32-bit):
        "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\update.exe" /DM="0" /NOMESSAGEBOX /RECEIVETIMEOUT=120
      • For Windows Vista/7 (64-bit):
        "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\update.exe" /DM="0" /NOMESSAGEBOX /RECEIVETIMEOUT=120
    4. Click Next
    5. Give a name to the shortcut, for example AntiVir Update
    6. Click Finish
Then click the new shortcut and check if AntiVir Update runs successfully. For the next automatic update, make sure the error 537 does not occur anymore.
  6. AntiVir Update continues to report error 537 In case none of the above solutions helped fixing the error, manual update is recommended, as described in the following article:
How to carry out manual update (IVDF Fusebundle)?
For a more exact error localization, please contact Avira Customer Support.

How to Show Hidden File

Windows 7 hides certain files so that they are not able to be seen when you exploring the files on your computer. The files it hides are typically Windows 7 System files that if tampered with could cause problems with the proper operation of the computer. It is possible, though, for a user or piece of software to set make a file hidden by enabling the hidden attribute in a particular file or folder's properties. Due to this it can be beneficial at times to be able to see any hidden files that may be on your computer. This tutorial will explain how to show all hidden files in Windows 7.
To enable the viewing of hidden and protected system files in Windows 7 please follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.

  2. Click on the Start button. This is the small round button () in the lower left corner of your screen that has a Windows flag on it.

  3. Click on the Control Panel menu option.

  4. When the control panel opens you will see a screen similar to Figure 1 below.

Figure 1. Windows 7 Control Panel
Figure 1. Windows 7 Control Panel

  5. Click on the Appearance and Personalization link.

  6. You will now be in the Appearance and Personalization control panel as shown in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2. Windows 7 Appearance and Personalization screen

Now click on the Show hidden files and folders option as shown by the red arrow in Figure 2 above.

  7. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

  8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.

DrvKiller SysAnti.exe

This article is taken from here for my future reference.

The file name SysAnti.exe has appeared in an virus analysis report detected/analyzed on 17 Sep 2009. You can see the original report at threatexpert.com

The virus installer may further download more harmful files from the internet. A good firewall can make your computer much safer by detecting such harmful activities and blocking them. Some good freeware recommendations would be ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, and Comodo Internet Security Free Edition (you can choose to install just the firewall from their security suite)

The title of this article indicates that this file Sysm.exe is generated by a virus I have termed as DrvKiller for my convenience of grouping its reports together. You can find them listed on this link
This Nomenclature will also help to separate similar filenames generated by different sort of viruses.

It is always possible that there could be some legitimate application using the same file name, you should be in a better position to find that out, if the file/process on your computer belongs to some legitimate application or not by using special software like the Microsoft's Windows Defender and Sysinternal's Process Explorer.

It creates the file SysAnti.exe on the infected computer. You need to search and delete it. You should end any running process named SysAnti.exe from Task Manager, and also remove the file's entry from windows startup.

Boot in safe mode

Sometimes you will not be able to delete a file even if you find it, in that case you should boot in safe mode and then try to delete it/ them.

View Hidden Files

Before you could delete SysAnti.exe and its associated files you need to search for them, and before doing that you need to enable to view hidden files and folders

  • How to Enable to View Hidden Files and Folders in Windows XP
Remove Processes from Task Manager

You can find out if a process appearing in your task manager is useful or harmful by using Windows Defender to see the path of a currently running program/ process and its publisher, so as to differentiate malware processes from those belonging to legitimate publishers. You may find such processes listed under Unknown Publisher in windows defender.

How to use Windows Defender in windows XP

How to use Windows Defender in windows Vista

Or you can use Sysinternal's Process Explorer for easy detection and removal of virus processes.

Removing entry from windows startup

The system configuration can be started in xp and in vista by typing msconfig in the run box/ start menu search box. In xp by clicking on Start > run . The windows startup is reversible, therefore you can check / uncheck any entry from windows startup any number of times.

After the system configuration window is open, Click on the Startup tab, that will list all the programs that are scheduled to start with windows. Expand the middle column using your mouse pointer so that you can see the full path of the program. Locate and uncheck "SysAnti.exe " (look for any other suspicious names) Press Apply , Press Close/Ok , Select "restart" at the next prompt.

Deleting files

After restarting the computer, use the windows search utility to search for "SysAnti.exe " and also search for any other suspicious names that you found and removed in the task manager or in the start up list. This search should find all its folders on the hard disk, delete the folders from the hard disk.
These are the files created by this virus installer

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SysAnti.exe
C:\Windows\Fonts\dcgje.dllThese are other files found on other installations of this virus
C:\Windows\Fonts\akkna.fon
C:\Windows\Fonts\rdjqa.fon
C:\Windows\Fonts\coju.fon
C:\Windows\Fonts\gdwfs.fon
C:\Windows\Fonts\hfdkj.fon
C:\Windows\Fonts\gccpx.dll
C:\Windows\svghost.exe

Creates following registry keys

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\DrvKiller
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\DrvKiller\Security
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\DrvKiller
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\DrvKiller\Security
You need to delete them manually.

Using CCleaner

Although you can easily get rid of the files in the temp folder simply by running a freeware like the CCleaner, and you will be much safer, if you set CCleaner to run automatically each time the computer starts. more about CCleaner on this link

Folder options disabled by Virus / Trojan

Are you among those who are not able to access or see your folder options under File Menu>>Tools inWindows Explorer on your Windows XP ? This problem of hidden or disabled folder options occur normally due to malicious virus (w32.rontokbro@mm) activity.

The virus creates an entry in registry to disable “Folder Options” in Windows explorer.

Let us see how we can fix it.

Fix:

In most of the cases, even if the virus is been already removed by your anti-virus program, it doesn’t restore the registry back to the original state. Also anti-virus usually does not delete the registry entry created by the virus.

For restoring the registry settings, follow the steps given below

Enable your folder options in explorer.

1. Go to Start > RUN

2. Type regedit and press enter.

3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer

Registry_setting_small

4. On the right side of the screen, you can see some registry entry names, out of them, right-click onNoFolderOptions and click Modify option.

5.A new small screen pops up, on this screen, sen the value data field as 0 (zero).Press OK.

That’s it but it requires reboot. Trouble Fixed.

If you don’t want to play with the registry yourself ,you can also download the registry file and double click it to add it to the registry.

Command Prompt disabled by virus

There has been two most successful methods with which you can enable your disabled command prompt.

Method 1:

The simplest method to get your command prompt back is to add a registry key , but you should be having registry editing is enabled.

1. Open Start >> Run and type the following command ( or just copy it )

REG add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System /v DisableCMD /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

2. Copy the above command and press Enter.

This will solve your trouble and your command prompt will be enabled.

Note: Method 1 may not work when your system is severely infected by a virus and even the registry editing is disabled due to which you are not able to run the above command from run prompt.

Method 2:

It involves a tool called RRT – Remove Restrictions Tool by sergiwa which can enable the disabledcommand prompt by virus.

It also helps in removing other restrictions which are also caused due to virus infection listed below.

  • Disable Folder Options
  • Disable Registry Tools
  • Disable Ctrl+Alt+Del
  • Disable Show hidden files & folders come with hidden attribute set to true!
  • Disable Run Command

Other than it also includes fixes for the removing 38 restrictions that are caused by different types of viruses.

Note: Make sure you boot in to Safe Mode to use Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT). Just click on the buttons and it’ll do it’s job.

The limited version is RRT tool is for FREE for personal use only. If you would like to use theapplication in a business environment you are required to license the application.

We hope at least one of method given above will help to fix the trouble.

Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator

Whenever they open Run and type regedit and press enter a message prompt appears saying “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator“.

Let’s see how can we fix it.

Fix:

There are two ways through which you can enable registry editing in windows XP

Method 1:

You can use a simple UnHookExec.inf to enable registry editing.

1. Download UnHookExec.inf

2. Right click on the downloaded file and select install.

Method 2:

For enabling you can also use the remove restrictions tool by Sergiwa.com, if the method 1 doesn’t work for you.

we have already posted how you can remove the restrictions imposed by the virus with RRT

1. First Download Remove Restrictions Tool [This is link to old freeware version of this tool, new version has been made paid. You can opt to buy it if you want to from this link. ]

2. Run and check the registry tools and click apply.

Method 3:

if the above two methods does not work for you , you can also try executing a small vbscript which I found on major geeks.

1. First Download EnableRegEdit.vbs

2. Double click on the downloaded file to enable registry editing.

We hope at least one of the above will help to fix the trouble.
